A note from the author

You may never think of your development program the same way again.

I'm not talking about some new fund-raising gimmick or some variation on the same old theme. I'm talking about a quantum leap in our ability to attract philanthropy ... advance our organizations of social good ... and create a brighter future for all those we serve.

The philanthropic quest offers a new model for the development process. It may seem like a bold statement, but I believe it is the most important innovation in the field since the introduction of the capital campaign.

The search for new ideas

For more than 20 of my 30-plus years in this profession, I've devoted a good deal of my time to working on new ideas and methods that could help us to raise philanthropy to greater heights. Lately, that effort has taken on a new intensity.

I've drawn on new thinking in the behavioral sciences and the business world, as well as my experience in the international arena.

In some cases, I found what I was looking for by returning to some of philanthropy's oldest traditions. At other times, it was the ground-breaking insights coming from the field of organization development that provided the theory and methodology that could take our organizations to their next level.

I've been applying this new approach in my own consulting and teaching. And people who've attended my workshops have been using it with great success in their organizations and consulting practices.

At one of my workshops for independent consultants, it was described as "the next generation in fund raising."

The series

In The Philanthropic Quest subscription series, this next-generation approach is presented in nine monthly installments -- which together make up an advanced learning program for development professionals.

Until now, this information has been available only to my consulting clients and workshop participants, to those organizations where I'll be speaking or conducting board retreats, and to a select group of practitioners.

Now, I've decided to offer it much more widely. I believe it's high time to spread these ideas throughout our profession -- so we can bring the facilitation of philanthropy to new heights and activate even more human energy for the common good.

Whether you are a seasoned development officer or new to the fundraising profession, I believe this series will support your highest aspirations, accelerate your professional development, and enable you to make an even greater contribution to the common good. And isn't that why you chose this profession in the first place?

This isn't for everyone

I've found that some are too wedded to the "conventional wisdom" to accept the challenge it offers.

But if you're the kind of person who's truly open to new ideas and ways of getting things done, you just might find it the most stimulating learning experience -- and the most useful -- that you've had in a long time.

You might even turn out to be one of those who helps to introduce "the next generation of fund raising."
