About the author

James Gregory Lord

James Gregory Lord is one of a vanguard of "global citizens" who are leading an emerging movement to advance our communities and our society to a higher level -- by activating even more personal initiative on behalf of the greater good.

For more than 35 years, Jim has devoted himself to advancing philanthropy. Since 1980, he has focused his energies on contributing to the "learning edge" in the field. His first book, Philanthropy and Marketing, is widely credited as the first to apply the principles of marketing to the development field. In this book, Jim urged us to shift our focus from "selling the needs" of the organization to listening to people in and around the organization, finding out what is most important to them.

Among Jim's 20 books and monographs on philanthropy, the best known is The Raising of Money: 35 Essentials Every Trustee Should Know. Nearly 20 years after its publication, it remains the international all-time best-selling book in the field.

In the last several years, Jim's work has moved into the development of whole systems -- both organizations and communities -- as the contributory nature of our species in those settings is recognized more and more. In particular, his work has been inspired by the principles and practices of appreciative inquiry, which has brought new ideas and energy to the fields of organization development and community development.

Jim has served some of the most prestigious institutions in the world. He has led learning programs -- including his core program on The Philanthropic Quest -- for consultants, staff and trustees from more than 50 nations.
